Topic: Sustaining DE&I - Undeterred by Resistance
Over the past few years we have experienced a significant uptick in demand for DE&I support throughout organizations across the board. On the contrary – we have also witnessed an undercurrent and often overt resistance to DE&I. During this session – DE&I experts will discuss the actions organizations have taken in response to these movements, the state of DE&I now, and practical advice for sustaining DE&I efforts in the face of resistance.

Juliana Mosely-Williams PhD, CDP
Dr. Mosley joined the University as its inaugural special assistant to the president for DEI on Nov. 1, 2020.
With 20-plus years of experience in education, she most recently served as the Chief Diversity, Inclusion and Community Relations officer at Chestnut Hill College. She previously held several positions as vice president for Student Affairs at Lincoln University, Edward Waters College, Marygrove College, and Philander Smith College; the director of Multicultural Affairs at John Carroll University; the executive assistant to the president at Kentucky State University; and a high school business teacher in the Houston Independent School District.
Dr. Mosley earned her PhD in Educational Leadership and her MA in Curriculum and Teacher Leadership from Miami University of Ohio, and BS in Business Education from Ball State University.
Qualified Tourism/Hospitality and Academic Professional Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE) proficient in developing and implementing plans, strategies, and initiatives specifically designed to raise destination's image for diverse, multicultural travel.
Experienced Certified Diversity Executive (CDE) with demonstrated cultural competence. Prepared to strategically position an organization to remove systemic barriers to inclusion, lead culture change, and transform the brand.
Graduate of Johnson & Wales University Providence, Rhode Island, with an A.S. Degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management; and a B.S. in Hospitality Management. Moderator:
We are pleased to announce that Shannon Maroney-Garrett will be the moderator for this panel discussion. She began her professional work in DE&I as the first Chairperson of GVFHRA’s Diversity Committee over twenty years ago. Shannon acted as Chair of the Diversity Committee for many years during which she facilitated the GVFHRA Diversity Award Program – recognizing many local organizations for their work in the DE&I space. Shannon also helped GVFHRA forge a relationship with the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Association for African Americans in Human Resources (NAAAHR). Together – GVFHRA and NAAAHR jointly hosted several DE&I events. Shannon led GVFHRA to receive SHRM’s Pinnacle Award for the Chapter’s work in DE&I. She went on to fill the role of SHRM State Diversity Director for Pennsylvania and SHRM National Diversity Council Member. As a result of all of these accomplishments, Shannon was an early recipient of the GVFHRA President’s Award (while Tammy Ford was President). In addition to her DE&I work with GVFHRA, Shannon also served on the planning committee that brought the Diversity Leadership Academy to the Pennsylvania State University Great Valley Campus. She received her Diversity Leadership Certification through this program which was awarded by the American Institute for Managing Diversity. Shannon also worked with the Great Valley School District to start their Council on Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) and continues to serve as a member of this Council. More recently, Shannon and her childhood friend, Hollis Davis Robinson, founded “Neighbors in Black and White, Inc.”, a non-profit organization established to share a message of hope that people of different backgrounds can live together in unity. They are producing a documentary by the same name, and plan to use it to share their message of hope far and wide (https://www.neighborsinblackandwhite.org/watch-the-film).
Shannon is a Global Human Resources Leader, having spent the majority of her career leading human resources functions within the life sciences industry. She incorporates DE&I into all aspects of her personal and professional life. Shannon received her Masters in Business Administration from Pennsylvania State University and her Bachelors in Journalism and Public Relations from the University of Maryland.
